Safely Purchasing Firewood Online
Need to stock up on firewood, but not sure how to purchase safely? Our friends at Measurement Canada have some tips! Adhering to the following precautions when purchasing firewood will help ensure that you get what you pay for.
Before Ordering Firewood
- Research the seller. Check online reviews, social media pages, or community feedback to confirm the seller’s reputation.
- Clarify the unit of measure. Make sure the seller specifies whether the firewood is sold by cord, face cord, or cubic meter — and ensure this matches what appears on your receipt.
- Avoid full prepayment. Whenever possible, pay a small deposit upfront and the balance after delivery and measurement.
- Know local restrictions. Some provinces or municipalities prohibit moving firewood across regions to prevent the spread of pests such as the emerald ash borer.
- Ask for delivery to be stacked in the truck so that you can measure it before it is unloaded.
When Receiving the Firewood
- Be present at the time of delivery. Do not rely on a neighbour to accept delivery on your behalf.
- Ask for a detailed receipt and verify that it includes:
- The quantity and type of firewood purchased
- The seller’s name, address, and telephone number
- The price paid
- Check the type and dryness of the firewood to ensure it matches what was ordered. Wet wood burns poorly and can cause chimney buildup.
- Write down the licence plate number of the delivery vehicle.
- Photograph your delivery. Take photos of the loaded truck and measured stack before unloading — this can help if a dispute arises later.
Avoiding Online Scams
- Be cautious with online-only sellers who demand full payment via e-transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency before delivery.
- Never share personal or banking information beyond what’s required for a legitimate payment.
- Watch for unrealistic prices or vague listings — these can be signs of fraud.
Do You Think You’ve Been Shortchanged?
If you received less firewood than you paid for, and after contacting the seller you are not completely satisfied, contact the nearest Measurement Canada office before using any of the firewood.
