Safely Purchasing Used Technology
When buying technology online, it’s important to know what you’re looking for, how it should work, and what’s a fair price. Following these precautions will help ensure that buying a cell phone, laptop, tablet, or other device is a positive experience.
Do Your Homework
- Get to know what the product should look like, including its operating system and features. Unboxing or review videos can be a great resource.
- Learn how replicas look and how to spot genuine devices.
- Research the average price for the item in both new and used condition.
- Verify the seller’s identity by checking their Kijiji profile, ratings, and past listings.
Look at the Ad Carefully
- Read the item description thoroughly. If details are missing, ask the seller about the condition, age, and reason for selling.
- Be cautious with deals that seem “too good to be true,” especially if the price is far below market value and the item is in perfect condition.
- Take a screenshot of the Kijiji ad to keep as a reference — it can be helpful in case of a dispute.
Buy with Confidence
- Always meet face-to-face. In-person meetings reduce miscommunications about the item, price, or payment.
- Inspect the item thoroughly. Test the screen, camera, keyboard, audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and any other relevant features.
- Check storage and memory to ensure it matches the advertised capacity.
- Look for signs of tampering or unauthorized repairs, like loose screws or uneven seams.
- Make sure all accessories, cables, and original packaging are included if advertised.
- Ask for a receipt with the seller’s signature, address, and device details (serial or IMEI numbers).
Data Security
- Reset the device to factory settings immediately after purchase. This removes any previous data, malware, or spyware.
- Run a quick security scan on laptops or Android devices if possible.
- Don’t log in with personal accounts until you’ve verified the device functions properly.
Tips for Smartphones
iPhone:
- Check the lock screen for “Lost Mode.”
- Ensure the Apple ID has been logged out.
- Ask the seller to reset the phone while you watch. Be cautious if they claim not to remember the password or are in a hurry.
Other Smartphones (Android, etc.):
- Check the IMEI number by opening the dialer and pressing *#06#. For phones with removable batteries, the IMEI may also be on a sticker under the battery.
- Verify the device status using Device Check Canada to ensure it is not reported lost, stolen, or blocked.
- If the seller does not have a SIM card, bring your own so you can inspect all features, including calling, texting, and data connectivity.
- Ensure the device is not FRP (Factory Reset Protection) locked on Android phones.
Payment Safety
- Prefer cash in person. Avoid wire transfers, gift cards, or prepayments for online-only deals.
- Take your time and don’t feel pressured. If something feels off, walk away.
