Protecting Your Kijiji Account from Phishing and Spoof Emails
The most common threat to your Kijiji account security comes from fraudulent “spoof” or phishing emails. These messages are designed to look like official Kijiji communications but are actually attempts by scammers to steal your personal information.
Phishing emails often:
- Claim that your Kijiji account has been disabled, locked, or suspended, urging you to click a link to “restore access.”
- Include fake Kijiji logos and formatting to appear legitimate.
- Contain links to imitation websites that look like Kijiji but are designed to collect your username, password, or even credit card details.
- To be clear — these emails and websites are not affiliated with Kijiji in any way. They are scams designed to trick you into revealing sensitive information.
Common Examples of Phishing Attempts on Kijiji
Here are a few real-world examples of scams that have recently targeted Kijiji users:
- “Your messages are blocked” scams: These emails claim your Kijiji inbox is full or blocked and that you must call a phone number to reactivate it. This is false — Kijiji never blocks inboxes or asks you to call to unblock them.
- Payment confirmation scams: You might receive an email that looks like a payment confirmation from Kijiji or PayPal, asking you to ship an item or click a link to verify funds. Always check your actual payment account directly — never trust an email alone.
- Fake account alerts: Emails warning that your “account will be deactivated unless you verify immediately” are almost always phishing attempts. Kijiji will never threaten to close your account through an email link.
What to Do If You Receive a Suspicious Email
If you receive a suspicious message that appears to come from Kijiji:
- Do not click any links or download attachments.
- Do not reply to the message.
- Forward the email as an attachment (so we can review the original headers) to phishing@kijiji.ca, then delete it immediately from your inbox.
